Commissioned by Cosimo I De' Madici about the middle 1500 as an 
offensive stronghold against the moresca piracy and plannedby the
architect Giovanni Camerini, is was the seat of the "Ordine dei
Cavalieri di S.Stefano". It became a barracks after having been
a Francescan convent. Situated in the historic center of Portoferraio,
is reached by the Salita Napoleone, a long and characteristic stairway
in pink stone.

 

 



Today Cultural and Congressual Centre named after Cesare De Laugier, Napoleonic official of mother Portoferraiese, hero of Curtatone e Montanara, is provided with a large congress room (About 250 seats) equipped with a screen and sound system and an exposition room. In its large and illuminated surroundings it also ccomodates the Pinacoteca Foresiana (picture gallery) and the Biblioteca Comunale (city library).
